Sometimes between 1886 and the early twentieth century, Andrew Carnegie visited his widowed sister-in-law Lucy at the home of her late brother in Dungeness, Florida - off the coast of Florida and Georgia. Andrew and Lucy are very close. He named Lucy to name his first steel billet boiler (thereby establishing a custom in the iron and steel industry to name women for the kilns); Lucy also named a son Andrew (grandmother and Tom have all nine children).
Once, when Carnegie came to visit, Lucy complained to her husband that he was stunned, that her son Andrew had not considered anything about writing a letter to his mother since he had gone to college.
Without hesitation, Carnegie told his sister-in-law that he could persuade the young student to write a reply. He was sure enough to bet Lucy 10 dollars, and Lucy agreed immediately with this bet.
